What made you choose your institution over others?
The university is in centre of Leeds city, so there is always something going on. I wish that I had explored more of what it had to offer in terms of culture. I also wish that I had explored more of the nature in and around Leeds.
What did you wish you knew before choosing your specific program?
Not to worry too much about grammar - they more or less cover most of the A Level material to get everyone on a similar level. When writing essays, there is no need to try and sound fancy. Just be clear and try and get your point as succinctly as possible.
What was your best experience at university?
Being part of the Laidlaw scholarship and getting the opportunity to travel to France for 2 weeks to conduct research. It has opened the door to so may other cool opportunities and I have met great students and members of staff from all across the world as a result.
What was your worst university experience?
This is more a word of warning: There is no need to rush into signing a house before Christmas. Save yourself the unnecessary stress. Trust me!
What is the hardest part about your program and what were the steps that you took to overcome any difficulties?
Trying to stay on top of reading and assignments alongside maintaining an active social life/ extra-curricular activities. To overcome this, I tried to stay as organised as possible by writing everything down in my diary and calendar. I made sure to start planning for assignments as early as possible and not leaving things too late. I tried to get as much work done in the library as possible; I am easily distracted in my bedroom.
What was your favourite module/course and why?
First year: MODL1100 (Politics, Culture and Society) which was called a cornerstone module and was specifically for joint honours students; PIED1511 (International Politics).
Second year: PIED2455 (State and Politics in Africa); PIED2558 (Security Studies); MM8468 (Language in Contexts) which was compulsory for French.
What tips and advice would you give to first year students?
There are so many opportunities on offer and at times it can be a bit overwhelming but be proactive in reading your emails and looking out for them in your first year. Put yourself out there as much as you can. There is no need to conform to the stereotypes of a 'typical Leeds student' because it doesn't exist! Do things that genuinely interest you and you will find great people and have an amazing time.
