What made you choose your institution over others?
I loved the idea of a collegiate experience at university. The city made me feel at home - as soon as I stepped off the train for the post offer residential visit, I knew that I wanted to firm Durham! The course seemed well suited to me as there was a variety of different topics, as well as different methods of teaching (a mix of lectures, tutorials, practicals and workshops). I had the opportunity to take a module from a different course which added some variety to my first year.
What did you wish you knew before choosing your specific program?
How much individual/outside reading I would be expected to do - I sometimes struggle to motivate myself so the idea of having to do work that isn’t specifically set was challenging.
What was your best experience at university?
Meeting all the friends I’ve made over the year. I have met so many amazing people from my college, course and even other courses and colleges! I know that I’ve made some friends that will stay with me after university.
What was your worst university experience?
Having to go to a 9am lecture the morning after a netball social. These are some of the best nights out, however they do come with consequences!
What is the hardest part about your program and what were the steps that you took to overcome any difficulties?
The amount of outside reading we are expected to do, but aren’t specifically set. I’m still trying to work on fitting in and motivating myself to do more reading, but setting aside set times to find and read a paper each day/week is a good starting point.
What was your favourite module/course and why?
Introduction to Psychology 2. This covered developmental psychology, language and communication units which I am really interested in. There is potential for further study in these areas in the future.
What tips and advice would you give to first year students?
Start doing work outside of contact hours straight away. Go over notes after each lecture as this will give you the option of not cramming in revision when it is coming up to exams! Be open to every opportunity as soon as you arrive at university; this will help you meet new people with similar interests to you.
